What happens when I join a Fraternity?
"Animal House" and more recently, "Old School" were very funny movies, but they were extremely bad for the image of fraternities. Furthermore, some fraternity chapters have actually tried to live up to the poor image that these movies promoted, in the hope that this will attract college students to join. Theta Xi is not one of these fraternities, and we are actively working to restore the reputation of college fraternities as valuable pillars of the campus and local community.
When you join Theta Xi, you will never be hazed, mistreated, embarrassed, forced to consume alcohol, perform meaningless tasks, or in any other way be treated as anything less than a friend and brother. However, you may be asked, and will have the opportunity to: manage a budget, plan a community service project, represent yourself and your fellow students to the University, or even help direct the operations of the national organization! The difference is that we will never ask you to do anything unless the brothers are doing the same thing, working alongside and supporting you the entire time. Theta Xi provides you with leadership opportunities to enhance your personal development, and lets you learn from other brothers who have faced the same challenges that you will encounter.
Will my dues money be spent on alcohol?
No. Our operating budget is carefully prepared each year to direct most of our money toward events that do not include alcohol. Our philanthropies, leadership workshops, and outdoor events give us a wide and unique range of college experiences that do not involve alcohol.
Will I be hazed?
Absolutely not! Theta Xi has a firm commitment against hazing. We believe it is important to treat all of our members equally. While associate members will not be allowed to vote in ritual meetings and do not learn the secret ritual, they have every other right brothers have, including freedom from hazing. If you have any further questions about hazing or feel that you are being hazed we encourage you to call 1-888-NOT-HAZE.
What is an associate member?
An associate member is a man who has accepted a bid or invitation to join our fraternity and has been pinned in the associate member ceremony. This ceremony is the first step in a seven week process designed to educate new men on the ideals, values, and history of the Theta Xi Fraternity. In addition numerous opportunities for personal development and bonding with the brotherhood are planned. Associate members do not know the ritual of the Theta Xi Fraternity as they are not initiated members. For that same reason, they are not allowed to attend ritual meetings and cannot vote on issues coming before the chapter, though they do have the opportunity to make their views known to the general membership. Associates are welcome and encouraged to attend all chapter events. |
